Why test for Adenovirus Type 1?

Breeders must test their dogs and kennels for CAV-1, which can cause ICH—a serious, contagious disease in dogs. Knowing a dog's adenovirus type 1 status helps identify exposed dogs, isolate them, disinfect, and take other containment measures. Testing also enables breeders to make informed decisions about which dogs to breed; even if a dog has no symptoms, it may pass on the virus to its offspring. Vaccines are available and, when administered by a veterinarian, can protect dogs from CAV-1 and other diseases.

What exactly is Adenovirus Type 1?

Adenovirus type 1, also known as CAV-1, is a strain of the adenovirus that can cause a serious and potentially life-threatening disease in dogs called infectious canine hepatitis (ICH). The virus primarily affects the liver, but it can also damage other organs such as the kidneys, eyes, and lungs.

Dogs can become infected with adenovirus type 1 through contact with infected urine, feces, saliva, or other bodily fluids. The virus can also be spread by contaminated objects such as food and water bowls, bedding, and toys. Symptoms of ICH can include fever, lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and jaundice. In severe cases, dogs may develop neurological symptoms such as seizures or difficulty walking.

Vaccines are available for adenovirus type 1 and are often included in combination vaccines that protect against other common canine diseases, such as distemper, parvovirus, and adenovirus type 2. Vaccination is an effective way to prevent infection and can help protect dogs from serious illness caused by adenovirus type 1.
