Total T4 (or Thyroxine) measurement is a useful screening test for diagnosing hypothyroidism in dogs. It is also an economical way of following post-pill treatment.
Hypothyroidism, an underactive thyroid condition, is a relatively common endocrine disorder in dogs. It is less common in other species. Hypothyroidism causes bodily functions to slow down. Clinical signs of the disorder include lethargy, weight gain, and haircoat and skin changes.

Lipase hydrolyzes triglycerides and is used primarily as an indicator of pancreatitis in dogs.
What is pancreatitis?
Pancreatitis is a disease caused by inflammation of the pancreas. The pancreas is a small fleshy organ located between the stomach and the small intestine. The pancreas has many functions related to digestion and the regulation of blood sugar levels.
Dogs with severe, sudden on-set pancreatitis are often very ill and show signs of vomiting, lethargy, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, and fever. Dogs with less severe forms of pancreatitis may show only mild signs of illness, and some dogs may have low-grade ongoing problems with recurring episodes of illness.

Fructosamine
Fructosamine testing involves checking the fructosamine level in the blood, and this testing will help to monitor diabetic pets.
Fructosamine is a protein that binds very strongly to glucose in the blood. Because fructosamine occurs in proportion to blood glucose, it can provide an accurate estimate of the amount of glucose in the blood. When the fructosamine level is measured, it helps determine the average glucose level for the previous 2 to 3 weeks. Fructosamine monitoring is often the preferred method for monitoring the glucose level in cats because it is not affected by stress, which can cause a sharp increase in the blood glucose level in cats.

C-reactive protein is one of the most sensitive markers of inflammation in dogs. Measurement of CRP is useful to confirm the presence of underlying inflammation (particularly in the absence of other clinical or laboratory indicators of inflammation) and to monitor response to therapy. Increases in CRP concentrations have been reported in various diseases, such as sepsis, immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA), and cancer.

Total Bile Acid
The Cube Vet Total Bile Acids assay was specifically developed to effectively determine if the liver is working properly, to identify liver disease, and to monitor response to treatment. The assay is based on the principle that a healthy liver can “recycle” bile acids, while a damaged or defective liver cannot.
Bile acids are compounds that are produced in the liver and accumulated in the gall bladder. They facilitate the digestion of food, notably fat. After food is consumed, a signal is sent to the gall bladder to forward bile acids into the small intestine. There they are mixed with the food and break down fats into smaller particles, making for easier absorption.

Cortisol
Cortisol is a glucocorticoid hormone that affects the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Chronic, excessive glucocorticoid release leads to hyperadrenocorticism (HAC).
The overproduction of cortisol causes symptoms such as hair loss, pot-bellied appearance, increased appetite, and polydipsia and polyuria. Addison’s disease (hypoadrenocorticism, or underproduction of cortisol) occurs less commonly than the Cushing’s disease in dogs.
Collection specifications for the various Cortisol testing will need to be understood by the user to get correct screening tests.
Phenobarbital
Phenobarbital is administered to control seizures and epilepsy, as well as to relieve cramps. Depending on the dosage, the drug has been observed to have either a sedative or a hypnotic affect. In cats, phenobarbital is the first choice for antiepileptic treatment. In dogs, it may be administered together with potassium bromide, depending on the individual reaction of the patient to the treatment.
Blood phenobarbital concentration should be checked approximately 12 to 14 days after administration. It is recommended that the blood sample be drawn approximately two hours prior to the next scheduled dose of the drug.
Equine Progesterone
During early pregnancy, progesterone is produced in the equine ovary by the corpus luteum (CL). Its concentration remains elevated and peaks between 60 and 120 days of gestation. Circulating progesterone is used diagnostically to evaluate luteal function during early pregnancy. When the circulation progesterone concentration reaches a distinct level, this can be considered adequate to maintain early-stage pregnancy.
There are a number of reasons for monitoring during pregnancy, such as uterine infections, history of pregnancy loss, and luteal insufficiency.
Bovine Progesterone
The progesterone level changes during the sexual cycle of cows. At day 0 of the cycle, no or only very low levels of progesterone can be detected due to an inactive corpus luteum. The progesterone levels reach their maximum around 13 – 14 days after the estrus.
In case the cow is pregnant, progesterone levels increase continuously up to day 21 after fertilization. Decrease of progesterone levels at day 20 shows the beginning of a new cycle which can be used for new insemination.
Therefore, measuring progesterone levels is a valuable tool for cattle farms to improve reproduction management.
