Why Don't My Numbers Match My Vets?
For a very complete explanation for this question, watch the video here, where we explain the reasons and why it's not that important. For your convenience, and to solve your concerns, CanineP4.Com provides a reference range chart that has already been created through much testing and research and is included with your analyzer. This reference range was created through comparative testing with a few of the most popular hormone immunology analyzers in the US, with hundreds of canine serum samples run. CanineP4 is the only company that provides this support! Contact us now at CanineP4.com or email us at Support@K9P4GO.com. Call 844-673-7378
👉My Progesterone Testing Is Not Matching My Vet's! Why? Start Here: Navigating The Transition From Veterinary Results To Your Own Results.
👉How Do I Know I’m Getting The Right Numbers?
For your convenience, a reference range chart has already been created through much testing and research and is included with your analyzer. This reference range was created through comparative testing with a few of the most popular hormone immunology analyzers in the US, with hundreds of canine serum samples run. Trust this sheet. Attempting to match your “new” numbers on your POCT device to those of your veterinarian’s or laboratory’s numbers will only leave you confused and frustrated. Use the videos provided here to understand why they are different and why that works just fine!
👉Should I Continue To Take My Samples Into My Trusted Vet’s Office Or Laboratory While I’m Testing On My At-home Analyzer?
You can… however, the results you get from the vet, unless they are using an identical machine, will never match. Doing this will complicate the initial learning of the machine and its tendencies, because all instrumentation produces different results. It takes a ton of testing and resources to cross-compare two different instruments, and even then, the crossover has statistical variation that can be difficult to understand.
Also, the assumption most breeders make is that their vet's analyzer is working correctly and their testing process is correct and without error. Our experience tells us that in many cases, this is not true. So keep that in mind when you are comparing with a remote testing lab. Ask them for the QC data for the day you tested for proof of accuracy. This is something most can give you.
👉So, Can I Use the Same Numbers I Was Using for Reproduction Timing Before on a Different Machine?
No. This will lead to incorrect assumptions and ultimately, a poor or missed pregnancy. Two different instruments will simply not match up values. You must use the reference ranges created for this machine to be accurate on the dog’s timing, combined with your own personal knowledge of your animals and their behaviors. CanineP4.com has taken all the expense and time it takes to make the timing chart for the systems you purchased from us, so that you know that the values you get simply need to be referenced to the timing chart to know where your dog is in the process! Simple and accurate!
👉Why Don’t All Machines Produce the Same Results?
FAQs and Knowledge Base:
👉What is A Method Comparison?
A method comparison establishes the differences between the two machines at all levels and provides a conversion, or tool, to effectively translate your machine’s results to what another machine would have produced, for the same sample. It is generated using the Y = mX + B equation and requires math to calculate between the two. If the remote lab is telling you your in-house testing numbers are incorrect, then ask them what unit they are testing with and if they have the method comparison for the system you're using and theirs.
👉Why Does The Finecare, Finecare Pro Dx, Anbio 100c, Bionote V200, And Other Units Not Require Calibration?
Calibration is required for instruments using liquid reagents that experience deterioration over time. Calibration accounts for inter-analyzer variance and changes in reagent quality and activity. Most POCT devices have a chip or ID card with a preset calibration curve that is designed for the system. This data is gathered by the manufacturer running hundreds of tests from low to high to calculate the curve and load the data to the chip that goes with the lot of test kits you are using.
👉Why Are the Anbio, Healvet, and FineCare's Reagents Kept at Room Temp and Not Refrigerated?
More cost-effective monitoring devices like the Finecare, Anbio, Healvet, and other POCT analyzers avoid the need for refrigeration by using “dry chemistry” reactions, which do not require refrigerated reagents. The dry chemistry reagents vary slightly more in reproducibility, in exchange for a much longer, much more stable reagent life span. Most other analyzers require 3 or more liquid reagents just to prepare a test.
👉I Took Two Samples a Day Apart, and the Second (Newest) One Reads Lower. What’s the Problem?
This may happen, especially on the lower LH-Surge stage of pre-ovulation. Because of the CV (coefficient of variation) range on the POCT analyzers, two results may produce nearly identical values. For instance, an average value of 5.0 ng/mL has an ACCEPTABLE range of 3.8-6.2 based on 12% CV. A value of 7.0 ng/mL has an acceptable range of 5.3-8.6. This demonstrates the possibility for an “Overlap” where the previous results are on the high end, and the new result is on the low end. Run another sample (you can use the same serum if adequately refrigerated or frozen).
👉Why Is There an Acceptable Range, and Why Won’t A Result Come Out the Same Every Time?
Most laboratories run under the Westgard Quality Control Rules, one of the most common is the 2SD rule. These ranges are not indicative of instrument problems, just the limitations of the science employed by them. So every test that is run will need to be within this range rule.
That also means that even if you run the same sample twice as fast as you can, you will not get the same value, but you will get a value that falls into the 2 standard deviation rule. This variation is called a standard deviation, which is a percentage measurement of the difference seen in the same sample. This deviation is expected, and the amount of deviation depends a great deal on operator accuracy when using a manual system, system design accuracy, and the accuracy of the type of testing material used in the test kits. The old adage is that if you get the same exact number twice, it is likely that your system is broken.
👉What Kind of CV% Can I Expect with FineCare Analyzers?
Through hundreds of tests run in-house, we have determined the average CV% to be 12%. In comparison, Eurolyser CubeVet is 5-8%, the MiniVidas averages 5%, and the Immulite about 3%, but these are much more expensive machines.
👉What Kinds Of Ranges Can I Expect Then On Most Poct Analyzers, Like The Finecare, Pro Dx Analyzers, And Others?
All of the results below are based on the average 12% CV:
Mean of 5 ng/mL: range 3.8-7.2
Mean of 10 ng/mL: range 7.6-12.4
Mean of 20 ng/mL: range 15.2-24.8
Mean of 40 ng/mL: range 30.4-49.6
Statistically, about 2/3rds of your results will fall within ±1SD of the mean. One in every 10 results may stray and require a rerun.
Elaborated Definitions
👉Why Is My Result Different From The Results Of A Different Analyzer?
Multiple chemical methods vary: FIA (FineCare), ELISA, ELFA (MiniVidas), Chemiluminescent (Immulite), etc. No one machine has the most accurate results; RIA or LC-MS are the gold standard used in upper-level labs.
Equipment cost affects accuracy. Less expensive POCT devices like the Finecare and Healvet use dry chemistry for longer shelf life at the expense of slight reproducibility.
Calibration curves are unique to each instrument, analyte, and reagent lot. No single master curve exists across machines.
👉How Do Laboratories Know They Are Getting the Correct Results?
They establish reference ranges or perform method comparisons using the Y = mX + B equation. They also should be doing daily testing with a known control with values for three levels: low, mid, and high, to verify they are producing accurate data. Ask your remote testing lab for their QC testing for the day you get your testing done as proof of accuracy! The Anbio, the Finecare vet, and Pro DX also use the tri-level control strip to verify your testing at home or in your office!
👉How Do We Know That It Is Standard for All Machines to Read Differently?
After more than 40 years of experience, this informational fact is common knowledge to us at CanineP4, and it is also an industry norm that all companies that manufacture testing equipment deal with daily.
Our use of Bio-Rad QC material tested across instruments showed the same progesterone sample ranging from 22.4 to 47.1 ng/mL, based on the unit that is testing it. This is common knowledge in the industry!

Different dog progesterone machines give different readings. Download the progesterone machine timing chart for the canine progesterone machine you purchased—focus on ovulation or fertile range, not raw numbers.
Key Points:
Use the dog progesterone machine-specific test timing chart. Each of the dog progesterone machines we offer comes with a timing chart to help you understand the testing results you are getting on each of your tests.
The timing charts have been developed from clinical level correlation testing (using 60-80 dog serums) with the Vet Standard Immulite systems! This means your progestone testing machine has already been aligned with the vet standard, so you have no need to compare your results to others. The chart will tell you where you are in the process. Always with professional help.
Match interpretations across devices. No two brands or models of dog progesterone machines will read the same testing values when you run the same sample on each. Each type, brand, and model will have a bias, either lower or higher than the unit you are comparing your testing to. The timing charts that come with all of the CanineP4.com progesterone testing machines will already have calculated that bias and make it possible for you to use the ranges on the chart with full confidence, since the timing chart is calculated from the vet reference method, the immulite. It's simple and easy!
