Get the Right Amount of Extender for a Successful Breeding

Choosing the correct extender size and dilution ratio helps protect semen quality, match the final insemination volume to the dog’s size, and avoid wasting product.

Key Limitation

Once opened, extender sterility and performance cannot be guaranteed after 24 hours. Use Extender Immediately after opening.

If unopened, the extender is good until the printed expiration date.

How Much Extender Should I Use?

The recommended extender ratio depends on semen concentration:

• 250–750 million/mL: Use a 1:3 ratio (1 part semen, 3 parts extender)
• 750–1,250 million/mL: Use a 1:4 ratio ( 1 part semen, 4 parts extender)
• 1,250+ million/mL: Use a 1:5 ratio (1 part semen, 5 parts extender)

If you do not know the semen concentration, use a 1:3 ratio.

Typical canine semen concentration is often around 100–500 million/mL, with many samples falling around 200–300 million/mL.

Which Size Should I Buy?

Choose 10 mL if:

• You need less than 10 mL of extender
• You are doing a single insemination
• You are working with a smaller dog
• You collected less then 3mL of semen

Choose 20 mL if:

• You need more than 10 mL of extender
• You are doing multiple inseminations
• You are working with a larger dog

Total Insemination Volume Per Breeding

Use the dog’s size as a general guide:

• Under 22 lb: 2–5 mL total volume
• 22–44 lb: 5–10 mL total volume
• Over 44 lb: Up to 20 mL total volume

How to Calculate Extender Amount

Extender amount = Final insemination volume − Semen volume

Example:

If your final volume is 8 mL at a 1:3 ratio, you would use:

• 2 mL semen
• 6 mL extender
• 8 mL total volume

Simple Rules

• If you do not know concentration, use 1:3
• Match total volume to the dog’s size
• For 1 breeding, 10 mL is usually enough
• For 2 breedings, 20 mL is usually the better choice

Collect Semen:
💧 Use the semen collection kit to gather a minimum of 5mL raw semen or a total extended volume of 10mL.
⚪ Collect the sperm-rich fraction and discard the clear prostatic fluid.
⏳ Allow semen to liquefy for 10-15 minutes or centrifuge under low speeds.

Mix with Extender:
🌡️ Combine semen with an extender like CaniPlus AI, avoiding water or rubber products that can damage sperm cells.

Optional: Perform Semen Analysis:
🔬 Analyze semen for concentration of raw semen.

Prepare the Syringe:
💉 Depress the syringe, insert into the semen sample, and gently draw it up. Use all plastic semen-safe syringes.

Lubricate the AI Tube:
🧴 Lightly apply HR semen-safe lubricant jelly to the AI tube, avoiding the openings to prevent obstruction.

Attach the AI Tube:
🔗 Secure the AI tube to the syringe.

Secure the Animal:
🐕 Elevate the female’s hind end for the procedure.

Insert the AI Tube:
📏 Gently insert the tube, angling upwards and then horizontally. If resistance is felt, back out slightly and reposition.

Deposit the Semen:
💨 Gently depress the syringe and deposit the semen. To release the residual semen, reattach the syringe and use air to expel the remainder.

Mimic a Tie:
🤲 Simulate a natural tie using a finger or artificial penis.

Allow Semen to Travel:
⌛ Let the semen travel into the uterus for about 10 minutes, elevating the female slightly to aid movement.
