Why you need to be testing CPL...

CPL (Canine Pancreatic Lipase) testing is performed to assess pancreatic health in dogs. It measures the levels of pancreatic lipase, an enzyme produced by the pancreas that aids in the digestion of fats. Dog breeders may consider testing for CPL for the following reasons:

  1. Pancreatic Health Evaluation: Testing CPL levels helps assess the function and health of the pancreas in dogs. Elevated CPL levels are often indicative of pancreatic inflammation or disease, such as pancreatitis. Breeders want to ensure that their breeding dogs have a healthy pancreas to minimize the risk of passing on hereditary pancreatic conditions to their offspring.

  2. Breeding Suitability: Pancreatitis and other pancreatic diseases can have a genetic component. By testing for CPL, breeders can identify dogs with underlying pancreatic issues that may be passed on to their offspring. Selecting breeding dogs with a healthy pancreas reduces the likelihood of transmitting genetic pancreatic conditions to future generations.

  3. Health Screening: Regular CPL testing can serve as part of a comprehensive health screening program for breeding dogs. It helps detect early signs of pancreatic disease, allowing breeders to take necessary precautions, provide appropriate medical management, or make informed decisions regarding breeding suitability.

  4. Management of Pancreatic Disease: If a breeding dog is diagnosed with pancreatic disease, CPL testing can help monitor the dog's response to treatment and track the progress of the disease. Breeders can work closely with veterinarians to manage the condition effectively, optimize the dog's health, and make informed decisions about future breeding plans.

It is important to note that CPL testing should be conducted under the guidance of a veterinarian who can interpret the results and provide appropriate advice based on the individual dog's situation. Regular veterinary check-ups, including pancreatic health assessments, are crucial for maintaining the overall health and well-being of breeding dogs and ensuring the quality of the breeding program.

It now comes with the Canine P4 Certified reading chart (we made the progesterone chart), so you can be confident in your results.
