What is Giardia? 

Giardia is a microscopic parasite belonging to the genus Giardia, known to cause a gastrointestinal infection called giardiasis in a variety of mammals, including dogs and humans. This single-celled organism exists in two main stages during its life cycle: trophozoites and cysts.

 

Trophozoites are the active, motile form of Giardia that live in the small intestine. They attach themselves to the intestinal lining, where they can reproduce by binary fission. Trophozoites are responsible for the clinical symptoms of giardiasis, including diarrhea, vomiting, weight loss, and other gastrointestinal distress.

 

Cysts, on the other hand, are the dormant and more resilient form of Giardia. They are encased in a protective outer shell, allowing them to survive outside the host's body in various environments, such as water and soil. Cysts are responsible for the transmission of Giardia from one host to another. When ingested, the cysts can reach the small intestine and transform into trophozoites, restarting the cycle of infection.

 

When screening dogs for Giardia infection, it is important to screen for both trophozoites and cysts. This dual-screening approach provides a comprehensive assessment of the dog's infection status. Detection of trophozoites is crucial because it confirms an active infection and helps in diagnosing the cause of the clinical symptoms. Meanwhile, identifying cysts is equally significant, as it indicates the potential for environmental contamination and the risk of transmitting the infection to other animals and even humans.
